New details are emerging about this year's Star Trek Jean-Luc Picard series for CBS All Access.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman revealed that Picard's status in the show is majorly impacted by the events following his last chronological appearance, in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis. "Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire," says Kurtzman. In the 2009 Star Trek movie, it was revealed that the Romulan homeworld, Romulus, was destroyed by a supernova, an event that would have changed the balance of power in the Alpha Quadrant. The new series is expected to be set in 2399, 12 years after the planet's destruction, and Picard could be acting in a diplomatic role rather than starship captain.
The star Patrick Stewart agreed to return as the U.S.S. Enterprise-D captain on the understanding "If we do this, I want it to be so different, I want it to be both what people remember but also not what they're expecting at all." He was, apparently, delighted with a 34-page precis of Picard's new status provided by the Trek writing team, including Pulitzer prize-winning Michael Chabon.
While no other original Star Trek: TNG actors are known to have been contacted or contracted to guest-star in the new series, Kurtzman left open the possibility of this happening.
Ja, also schade, dass Romulus "immer noch" zerstört ist.... aber ansonsten bin ich auf die Serie gespannt und denke mal, Patrick Stewart wäre nicht in dieser Rolle zurück gekommen, wenn sich die Ideen wie totaler Schrott angehört hätten
